They give us a two-door sedan, last year’s model. It’s basic and plain and, I can’t believe I’m saying this, I miss Betsy. Sheila, with her personality and her grit, deserves a ride with spirit. This one is kind of boring. And smooth.

Eros, I miss the bumps. I must really be losing it.

By the time Sheila finishes signing the contract and the clerk hands her the keys, it’s already past four o’clock. I don’t know where the day has gone. I mean, we spent most of it waiting for the tow truck driver, and Betsy wasn’t the fastest of vehicles, but we’re barely fifty miles out of Salem. We wasted the whole day.

At least, that’s what I probably should think. As desperate as I am to get to HQ, I have to admit that I’m not too upset at the prospect of spending more time with Sheila. When she suggests we go get some food since it’s been ages since breakfast, I agree immediately. Then, when our early supper turns into a three-hour four-course meal—I picked the place and, as a professional caterer and self-proclaimed foodie, Sheila critiqued each course that we shared—I eagerly go along with it after she says we should find a place to stay over in town. We can continue the trip to Pennsylvania tomorrow morning after we get some rest.

Okay. It seemed like a good idea at the time. Mainly because it never occurred to me that we wouldn’t have our own rooms. Or have this much trouble finding any at all.

Her hands on her hips, Sheila glares over at the receptionist and demands,“What do you mean, you’re all full?”

After what happened outside of the car rental place, I hang back and let Sheila handle booking a room. Of course, I thought it would be as easy as going up to the counter and asking for a room. Not quite.

I can tell that Hurricane Sheila is brewing. This is the third hotel that we’ve stopped in, and the one the nice lady at the quaint bed & breakfast suggested we try when she had no vacancies. It’s an upscale chain—and I hate to think how much it’ll cost—but there’s supposed to be plenty of rooms.

Guess not.

I back away, giving Sheila space.

“I’m sorry, miss. I’d love to be able to help you, but there’s a conference being held in town and our rooms have been booked for weeks. Most of the other hotels in town, too. I’d love to help you… I mean, I really would—”

His words drift over to me. I’m not eavesdropping, not on purpose anyway, but the way he emphasizes really catches my attention. That’s when I notice a wave of heat, sudden attraction that is almost scorching. It’s coming off the handsome dark-haired man at the counter—the one who’s currently being talked at by Sheila.

From the intensely interested look on his face to the way his dark eyes dip a little down to her impressive chest, then back to watch her as she continues to talk, I know exactly what he’s thinking.
